This was probably one of the saddest calls I've ever received. It came from the adult daughter of a claimant with whom I've spoken several times. The claimant is very nice, but has been very despondent regarding the length of time her social security disability case is taking. Of course, I've told her how backed up the system is at the individual DDS offices in each state and at the various Offices of Hearings and Appeals. But I know that understanding how goofed up the system is doesn't alleviate any of the anxiety when it's YOUR case.
The anxiety of having to wait on a social security disability system that moves as fast as the average garden slug is terrible, without a doubt. But for this poor woman, her most recent denial letter (reconsideration level) was too much to take.
The woman's daughter informed me that her mother was now on an inpatient stay at a behavioral health center for a suicide attempt with pills.
I told the daughter, a young woman in her twenties, that when her mother finally got to a hearing, the judge would consider all the medical records, even the records from this psychiatric stay. Unfortunately, the wait for her hearing would be about 14 months, based on how long this particular Hearing office was taking lately.
