Just spoke to a young woman who needs to appeal her disability claim denial. She has colon cancer and is currently in chemotherapy. On top of this, as if that wasn't bad enough, she has degenerative disc disease and was recently given a fibromyalgia diagnosis. And...she had a repair done to her left achilles tendon in 02/04. I told her that since she has just gotten her initial claim denial, she might have a two year wait ahead of her. Fortunately, she had heard this from a friend and so this news did not come as a total shock. The really sad thing about her case is that she and her husband are now having to consider filing for bankruptcy, despite the fact that they don't have a lot of debt. Just a house payment, car payment, and a couple of small credit card balances. Apparently, what is doing them in is the loss of her income and the cost of her medical care and/or medications (the hospital bill is now over $60,000.00). Apparently, she and her husband had been unable make their last cobra payment. Of course, if her cobra was billed quarterly, I can see why that would be a problem as the payment might have been fairly large. Speaking for myself, I know that saving for upcoming bills is sometimes not so easy. But this would be especially hard if you're having difficulty making ends meet on a week to week basis.
