Earlier, I spoke to a gentleman who was denied on his reconsideration in early december. Thankfully, he still has time to request his hearing. He sounded very winded over the phone and when he told me about his problems it put into perspective how he sounded. He's had cerebral palsy for many years but he was still able to work up until march of of 2003. He has lower back problems, a goofed up right shoulder (that was injured in a work accident and has recently had a tendon repair), high blood pressure, cervical neck problems (bone spurs and degenerative disc disease, and lumbar back problems. However, he also has crohn's disease. Since many people with crohn's have headache problems, I asked him if he had migraines. And he does. He is on morphine for his migraines. Not suprisingly, he also has sleep problems. And to top it off, he takes prednisone daily. And pred is not something that is great to be on. True, it helps out with inflammation in a way few other things will, but long term prednisone use can have awful side effects (which is why it's usually given in a taper.
I shouldn't be amazed that his reconsideration was denied, but, considering how bad off he is, amazingly enough, I am still flabbergasted that a disability examiner (more likely an examiner's idiot supervisor) denied his claim.
This poor fellow and his wife used to have substantial savings, but that's been whittled down considerably and I suspect, while he waits for a hearing date to be set, that he won't have anything left. With this particular hearing office, he is looking at an 18 month wait.
