AM I ENTITLED TO SEE MY SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY FILE?

The following information about Social Security Disability and ssi benefits should assist you in learning more about how the disability process works and specifically relates to the question, "Do I have the right to see and view my social security disability file?"

Do I have the right to see and view my social security disability file?

Yes, you do have the right to view your social security file. But the social security office is under no obligation whatsoever to copy any portion of your file for you.

To view your file, simply contact the social security office and inform them of your desire to do so. If you wish to copy the file, or portions of it, this will be possible as well.

Note: There are instances in which a claimant will not be given access to their social security records. If the claimant's records are psychiatric in nature, this may be the case. However, even under these circumstances a claimant's representative or physician may given access to the file on the claimant's behalf.
