You'll find this in a variety of published sources: the commonly accepted ratio is 10:1. That is, ten times as many women get fibromyalgia as do men. Why is this the case? There is no definitive answer. However, it may point to the hormonal differences in men versus women. Many women report the onset of fibromyalgia concurrent with menopause and women who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia prior to menopause sometimes have reported that their symptoms increased with the onset of menopause. And there is the hormone serotonin, a "feel good" hormone. Serotonin levels are typically lower in fibromyaglia patients, but are also significantly lower in women verus men. |
