Atrial fibrillation occurs in the atria. The atria are the upper heart chambers and atrial fibrillation is essentially heart rhytmn that is abnormal. Those individuals with atrial fibrillation may experience symptoms such as chest pain and palpitations, but some individuals may also experience stroke or heart failure. How is atrial fibrillation diagnosed? By the use of an EKG (the acronym stands for electrocardiogram). How is atrial fibrillation treated? Generally by the use of certain medications such as calcium channel blocks and beta blockers. However, some patients may require the use of a pacemaker. |
