Ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is an autoimmune condition that has previously gone by the names "poker spine" and "bamboo spine". It is an inflammatory condition that is chronic and for which the cause is unknown. Ankylosing spondylitis can affect a number of joints including the hips and neck joints. But it primarily affects the spine, causing stiffness and lost mobility. Ankylosing spondylitis seems to run in families and may be connected to the existence of a particular gene marker.
