Angina pectoris is also known as chest pain. This type of pain is caused by loss of oxygen to the heart, a result of ischemic heart disease (atherosclerosis or spasms of the coronary arteries). Angina pain radiates typically along the neck and shoulder out to the left arm. Angina attacks are often related to physical exertion (the heart being forced to work harder with not enough oxygenated blood), anxiety-related stress, and being exposed to the cold. Nitroglycerin is typically prescribed to treat angina. |
