Anesthesia is a term taken from the greek word, anaisthesia, meaning the lack or absence of all sensation. Modern anesthesia is induced for medical purposes, including surgery, and may be applied topically, locally, regionally, or generally. Anesthesia may also be induced by hypnosis and is sometimes the result of traumatic damage to nerve fibers.
