Amaurosis is a type of blindness that results not from damage to the eye but rather from a systemic origin. Amaurosis can be caused by a disease of the optic nerve or by a disease process within the brain itself. Amaurosis may also be caused by acute gastritis and by continued and excessive use of substances such as alcohol and tobacco. There are, however, instances of amaurosis following the occurrence of emotional trauma and in such cases blindness may last for days, weeks, or months. |
