Alveolitis is defined as an inflammatory state of the alveoli (small microscopic air sacs in the lungs that allow for the exchange of gases). It is caused by the breathing in of allergens (an allergen causes an allergic reaction and can be pollen, house dust, spores, or other environmental contaminants). Alveolitis is characterized by dyspnea (short on breath), joint and muscle pain, fever, coughing, and sweating. Repeated instances of alveolitis can lead to the development of COPD, otherwise known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. |
