Alkalosis is an abnormal condition of the body that is characterized by PH levels in excess of 7.45, which may result from acid deficiency or excess levels of alkaline bicarbonate. There are different kinds of alkalosis. One type is respiratory alkalosis. This is caused by hyperventilation. Another type of alkalosis is metabolic alkalosis from excess levels of bicarbonate. Metabolic alkalosis can also be caused by loss of potassium or loss of gastric acid through vomitting. |
