Achondroplasia is a disorder of the growth of cartilage in the long bones and the skull. The effect of this condition is limited development of the skeleton and dwarfism. Achondroplasia begins with the development of the fetus and the condition is an inherited one. Most individuals who develop achondroplasia will not survive beyond the first year of life and there is no cure for the condition, though orthopedic surgical intervention may come into play. |
