Diabetes is a condition that exists when the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient amounts of the hormone insulin to transport sugar, or glucose, from the bloodstream to the cells. Diabetes, as either type I or type II diabetes, can cause damage to blood vessels, internal organs, the eyes, and, if not treated properly, can result in neuropathies, blindness, and even amputation of extremities.
